Early Career
Born as Selena Marie Gomez on July 22, 1992 in Grand Prairie, Texas, United States, she is an American actress and singer who has won scores of young fans as the feisty star of the Disney TV series Wizards of Waverly Place (2007-2012) and as a pop singer.
Gomez was named after a popular Tejano singer named Selena Quintanilla-Perez who was murdered by a fan in 1995. Selena grew up in suburban Dallas. She tried for a role in PBS children’s TV show Barney & Friends and regularly appeared on the show from 2002 until 2004. She debuted on the silver screen in the film Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003) and later auditioned for Disney Channel. She eventually landed a guest part on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. In the year 2007, Gomez was cast to play Alex Russo, a naughty tomboy who had magical powers on a new Disney show titled Wizards of Waverly Place. The show’s theme song was sung by her and it became an instant hit with the pre-teen audiences and comparisons were drawn between her and Disney’s reigning queen of the time: Miley Cyrus.
